Royal Navy contingent

The Naval Brigade is drawn from two vessels, the corvette HMS Carysfort and the torpedo boat depot ship HMS Hecla, comprising two companies of sailors and a battery of Gatling guns. The brigade is supported by a Royal Marine Light Infantry detachment from the troopship HMS Tyne. The brigade is commanded by Rear Admiral Sir William Hewett VC KCB.

Prominent among its numbers are Captain Arthur C Wilson (captain of HMS Hecla), and Private Thomas Edwards (1bn The Black Watch); Edwards was seconded to the brigade as a mule driver. Both were awarded the Victoria Cross for their actions at second El Teb and Tamai respectively.
